We want to be a church of disciples, who make disciples of Jesus Christ, by allowing God’s word to do God’s work through God’s Spirit
To do this, we want to focus on three key areas of growth:
Growth in Knowledge
“And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (Joh 17:3)
To receive eternal life we must know God. As we read God’s word, we find that he is triune, Lord and saviour. It is as we learn about him through his word that we will truly come to know him in a meaningful and personal relationship. As our knowledge of him increases, by reading and sitting under the word, our relationship with him will become ever deeper.
Growth in Love
“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment” (Php 1:9)
As we increase in our knowledge of God through his word we will find our love for him increases. To know God is to love him, and to know him better is to love him more. Similarly, as our love for God increases our desire to keep his commandments will also increase. This includes loving other believers, our neighbours and even our enemies. Just as we grow to love God by knowing him, we come to love others when we know them and spend time together with them.
Growth in Maturity
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving” (Col 2:6)
The Christian life is one of continual growth. We are to continue to walk in Christ – growing in our knowledge and love of God – and continually striving, by the help his Spirit, to become the people he calls us to be. The aim of the Christian life is ultimately to become ever more like Jesus. We do this with God’s help, increasing in our knowledge and love for him, until we are finally with him and made to be like him.
